Imagine a story carved in stone, weathered by time but still whispering the lives of people from thousands of years ago. Deep in the heart of Ulsan, the petroglyphs of Bangucheon Stream (반구천 암각화) are about to receive international recognition. With UNESCO’s advisory body recommending its inscription as a World Heritage Site, Korea may soon celebrate its 17th addition to this prestigious list.
🕞 A Glimpse into Prehistoric Korea
The Bangucheon Petroglyphs include the famed Bangudae Petroglyphs and Cheonjeon-ri Inscriptions and Petroglyphs, designated as National Treasures. These intricate carvings are not just artworks—they are literal windows into the prehistoric lives of Koreans, with images of whales, deer, humans, and mysterious symbols covering the cliff faces.
🐋 A World of Whales, Hunters, and Ancient Scripts
What makes these petroglyphs especially unique is the world’s oldest known depiction of whale hunting. Whales struck with harpoons, mothers with calves, and detailed movements hint at sophisticated marine observation long before written history. A short distance away, the Cheonjeon-ri site reveals hundreds of characters and symbols, including ones attributed to King Beopheung of Silla (6th century).
🌊 Threatened by Time—and Water
For decades, these priceless records were at risk of destruction due to flooding. Every year, rising waters from Sayeon Dam submerged the Bangudae site for weeks at a time. Though various conservation plans were proposed, it wasn't until recently that serious efforts—like installing a floodgate—started moving forward.
🌍 On the Verge of UNESCO World Heritage Status
In May 2024, ICOMOS, UNESCO’s advisory panel, officially recommended the inscription of the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream. With no major opposition expected, the final decision is scheduled for July 2025 in Paris. If approved, Korea will proudly add its 17th site to the World Heritage List.
